Pharmacy technicians keep pharmacies running safely and efficiently, usually working under a pharmacist's supervision. Core responsibilities include:

• Managing stock, ordering, and controlled drug processes
• Referring patients to a pharmacist, doctor, or other health professional when needed

Most newly qualified pharmacy technicians start on Band 4 of the Agenda for Change pay scale, progressing to Band 5 with experience or specialist responsibility, such as becoming an Accuracy Checking Technician (ACT). Senior, leadership, or highly specialist posts can reach Band 6, occasionally Band 7.

At the top end — senior NHS Band 6 roles, London weighting, or agency/locum work — pay can reach £45,000–£50,000+, with some senior London posts cited above £67,000. Self-reported data on Glassdoor puts the 90th percentile above £70,000, though this likely blends in adjacent or senior pharmacy roles rather than reflecting typical technician pay.

It's mixed. Many technicians find the work meaningful and well-suited to their skills, but the profession also carries real strain: one survey found 53% had considered leaving the profession in the past year, and 66% had considered leaving their current job.

In community pharmacies especially, low pay, limited recognition, and high workload weigh on satisfaction — only 38% of technicians surveyed felt satisfied with promotion and career advancement opportunities.

Unlikely to eliminate the role, but it is reshaping it. AI and automation already handle repetitive tasks — pill counting, inventory, prior authorisations, routine refills — freeing technicians for more patient-facing work. Automated risk estimates vary widely (25%–77% depending on the model used), but these measure which tasks can be automated, not whether the job disappears.

Technicians who build skills managing and troubleshooting automation, and who take on more clinical responsibility, are best placed for where the role is heading.

Attention to detail and accuracy under pressure is usually cited as the core skill — dosage calculations and dispensing accuracy carry real patient-safety stakes. Close behind: strong numeracy, clear communication with patients and clinical staff, and staying organised and calm during a busy, interruption-heavy day.

Common alternative or related titles include dispenser, dispensing assistant, pharmacy assistant (a more junior, non-registered role), Accuracy Checking Technician (ACT), and pharmacy support worker. Titles vary by sector, but "pharmacy technician" is the formally registered title with the GPhC.
